When you’re preparing for a business trip, unless your name is Jack Reacher there’s far more to organize than a toothbrush, cash, and a thumb for a free ride to a destination unknown:
- You’ll need the right clothes, technology, and business materials
- You’ll need to arrange meetings, write and practice presentations, and prepare answers to the difficult questions
- Oh, you’ll also need to book flight tickets and accommodation near to your business appointments
Whatever the reason for your business trip, you’ll probably be on a strict budget of time and money. Preparation is key to making it a success.
In this article, you’ll get a few pointers as to how to prepare for a business trip, and discover how Up and Away could relieve you of some of the trip planning burden. You’ll have more time and be more relaxed as you prepare for the real business at hand.
Create a corporate travel checklist
An essential part of business trip planning is to make a checklist of everything you need to do. Start with your itinerary, and plan early. Book the meetings your need to attend, and make sure that other required attendees are informed or invited.
Book your travel and hotels
If your business trip is a straightforward in-and-out affair, then booking travel should be similarly straightforward. Unfortunately, few corporate travel arrangements are this easy. Whether traveling at home or abroad, the probability is that your business trip will cover several cities or areas – with tightly scheduled appointments in each. You can’t afford for anything to go wrong.

- Admittance to gyms and health clubs
- Room upgrades

Pack for business
A few days before your business trip, get packing. Don’t leave it to the last minute, and pack as light as possible without forgetting the essentials. Rolling clothes as you pack them helps to prevent wrinkles and saves space. Pack all the toiletries and medication that you may need.
Double-check that you have all the business materials you need: laptop or tablet; pens and notebooks; documents; cellphone; chargers.
Before you leave for the airport, double-check that you’ve got your wallet, credit and debit cards, tickets, and passport.
At the airport
Arrive early, and take reading material with you to help pass airport time.
When you check in, look at which line has the most single male travelers. These lines tend to move the fastest. Try to avoid the lines with families and small children.
If you have the option of spending time in the VIP lounge, do so. You’ll be more relaxed for your flight, and be able to take a leisurely beverage and bite to eat.
On the plane
If you’re flying long distance:
- Book the red-eye flight to sleep better and overnight on the plane
- Relax your body into the right time zone
- Drink water the day before flying to help with hydration
- Walk the plane a few times to keep the blood flowing
- Change your watch to the time of your destination
When you arrive at your destination
Whatever you do, try not to go to sleep in your hotel until after dark. If you do, you’ll sleep for your usual time and wake up in the middle of the night disoriented and unable to fall back to sleep. Get a good night’s sleep, and you’ll be fit for your morning business meeting.
